Adding some elegance to hip community mall The 49 Terrace, Yasashii hides its minimalist décor behind a row of bamboo. The restaurant moved from Srinakarin half a year ago, hoping to attract more customers in this more Japanese-friendly neighborhood. With lots of natural light, cozy booths and a terrace that is particularly romantic at night, the new address is certainly very chic. The menu is a mix of some classics and fusion dishes like chicken teriyaki with avocado salsa (B360), which is surprisingly delightful. The light, crispy chicken is flavorful and a perfect match for the chopped avocado salsa which is a refreshing and yet very flavorful, change from the usual creamy mayo. The udon with prawn and scallop in cream sauce (B360) is quite tasty, too, thanks to the naturally sweet prawn and lightly seared scallop. In terms of texture, the shrimp eggs bring a bit of crunch to the soft udon, and the thin dressing remains very discreet. The unagi shrimp roll (grilled eel rolls stuffed with tempura shrimp and vegetables, B360) is another favorite, thanks to its combination of tastes and textures: tempura shrimp, avocado and cucumber. Every ingredient seems handpicked to introduce a burst of sensations in your mouth. Naturally, we don’t like every dish quite so much: the seared scallop with garlic butter (B360) is a tiny portion (two scallops), with nothing really going for it apart from the scallop’s beautiful golden brown hue. In fact, you’re better off avoiding the classics altogether. The salmon, tuna, mackerel and seabass nigiri mori awase set B (B520) tastes quite like the sushi sets you’ll find in supermarkets. While Yasashii is a bit pricey and fails to deliver authentic Japanese cuisine, we do really like the mood and their fusion dishes.
