X Wine Z
The buzz: What was formerly the first floor of Reynard has now become a wine bistro that has one Canadian and one Thai chef working together in the kitchen. As for now, they’re having a soft opening, looking to lure customers in with their B990 buffet promotion available only this month.
The décor: Nestled on the corner of Soi Promphong, X Wine Z benefits from being on the front of the building, and passersby are unlikely to miss its 4-meter-tall Eiffel Tower replica. The mood and tone is not so much different from other wine bistros: sophisticated black walls with gold rim, black-framed glass windows and wooden furniture. There are few bar seats and tables inside, leaving space for a wine cellar and a DJ deck.
The food: Appetizers include bruschetta (B190), cold cuts (B190) and cheese selections (B150). We suggest you order their good-looking raw salmon with chili and lemon sauce (B250), a healthy start before trying the chef-recommended grilled sea bass with ratatouille (B650) or the baked river prawn thermidor with parmesan cheese and white wine (order one day in advance, B850). For something cheaper, go for their buffet with more than 50 dishes like French pizza with parma ham, spaghetti with bacon and dried chili alongside freshly-made desserts—banana toffee, apple crumble and blancmange (French almond pudding).
The drinks: It’s a global affair, with shelves of selections organized by country. Wine starts from B750 for a bottle. St. Germain liquor is the key ingredient for their signature cocktails (B380)—Parisian gin and tonic, mojito and The Rosette Garden (rose Champagne with St. Germain). Local beers (B120), Stella, Paulaner, The Collins and martinis (B250 each) are also available.
The crowd: This venue attracts Sukhumvit office workers and some middle-aged residents sipping the house wine. Pieng-or Mongkolkumnuankhet
