Sonic
The buzz: The folks behind Cosmic Café have revamped and reopened the former Jet bar under a new name Sonic; and the debut party with Dudesweet has already created an indie vibe for the joint.
The décor: A warehouse, bare and raw, with naked bulbs over the bar and metal pipes along the rafters. While the outdoor terrace is all about dining seats, the main room is filled with club-style tables and a couple of colorful sofas that get moved out when the place gets packed with revelers.
The music: Normally, the resident DJ will spin indie-rock tunes on the terrace, while the club rooms usually have two different live bands.
The price: Sonic keeps the booze options limited and basic. Whiskey starts from B750-3,300. Beer is B140-200 by the bottle. (Draught beers will be on tap soon, we’re told.) Spirits start from B950-2,500. Cocktails are B170-200. Mixers are B50. And they’re doing food, too.
The crowd: This spot draws in a mix of indie music lovers from expatriates to young hipsters and stylish media-industry personalities.
Why you’ll come back: If you work or live around the Thonglor-Ekkamai area and Cosmic Café is too far for you, it’s a solid alternative for quality music all week long. Insider tip: Their opening party is this week (Feb 17) and New York indie band The Pains of Being Pure at Heart will be coming next week (Feb 27).
