Mellow Cafe
It seems so unlikely that somewhere like the Shelter 1 Acre mini-complex situated on an almost abandoned soi off Prasertmanoonkit Rd. should house not one but two decent dining spots. But that’s the case after the owner of Hungry Eatery, a Thai/international restaurant on the site, decided about six months ago to open the adjoining Mellow Café, which fits in well with Bangkok’s ongoing fascination with wine bistros. Decked out in a largely black-and-white art deco style, with hanging lamps offering dim light, the place exudes a romantic ambiance. Unlike many other wine and dine places, Mellow Café doesn’t go too over-the-top with their menu; yet, while French and Italian cuisines are both heavily represented, it’s the delicious Thai options that really stand out. The moo tok crok (papaya salad with grilled pork and noodles, B180) is a mouthwatering example of what you can expect from the kitchen, which is shared with Hungry Eatery. The dish strikes a fine balance between sweet and sour, and is pleasantly spicy. The aromatic tom saep kor moo yang (spicy soup with grilled pork, B120) is a similarly impressive mix of flavors. The deep fried mushrooms (B100) don’t look particularly enticing, but any misgivings are blown away by the salty flavor and crunchy texture. Unfortunately, the international options don’t fare quite so well. The barbecue pork ribs (B380) are too dried up, something the sour marinade can’t rectify. The pizzas (all B290) are also disappointing—regardless of topping, the base is so dry, it’s closer to a cracker. You’re better off sticking to the Thai side of the menu or venturing no further than fusion dishes like spaghetti kee mao (stir fried squid ink fettuccini with seafood in spicy sauce, B190). With tasty local fare and wine served at pretty appealing prices (from B110 per glass and B950 per bottle), Mellow Café is a sound option for those not concerned about getting a little off the beaten track.Corkage B300.
