The fact the place is usually busy must mean that they’re doing something right, though, it must also be said that it’s normally crowds of tourists flocking here—not necessarily locals. The décor is pretty nice, if a little simple, with lots of industrial touches like the exposed brick walls, grey panelling and bulb-filled ceiling in one of the two main dining sections, plus there’s a small outdoor area and two private rooms upstairs. As you might guess from the décor, this is comfort food with some Thai-inter fusion thrown in. Presentation is clearly very important; just look at the recommended, spaghetti gung lai suea (spaghetti with tiger prawn, B380), which is artfully served with the head and tail included. While we liked the well-cooked al dente pasta and the appetizing aroma of garlic, butter and pepper, the prawns were slightly overcooked and the whole dish lacked any strong flavors. It’s a similar sentiment for the pla gung (B200, spicy herbal salad with shrimps topped with lemongrass); honestly, they should be doing better, especially with such fresh ingredients (and at this price), but the result is just average. Some dishes fair much worse though, like the deep-fried seabass with herbs (B420), which is horribly dry and salty and was served up lukewarm last time we visited. The Full Moon Pizza (mozzarella, sweet basil, olive, pepperoni and eggs, B250 for 10”) is also a fail, covered as it is in a excessive amount of oil and a crust that was tasteless and bland. We kind of understand it all though, high prices and weak flavors make it pretty clear that Mazzaro is looking at the tourist market. It’s a slight shame though, as the long list of drinks and the pleasant decor mean it could have been so much more.
