La Cantina
The buzz: Sat within walking distance of BTS Asoke, this new Italian eatery works with the tried-and-trusted concept of fresh homemade food using top local and imported ingredients. La Cantina is the project of Chef Roberto Rota, previously involved in well-known restaurants Gianni and Signor Sassi, who hops tirelessly from table to table to make sure of his customers’ satisfaction.
The décor: The cozy home-style eatery boasts an earth tone dining area with a white ceiling covered with artificial grape vines and yellow brick walls showcasing canvas paintings. A wooden wine cellar sits to one side. We’re told the restaurant will also soon welcome an open pizza oven.
The food: The menu covers all the big Italian favorites, from starters like zuppa di pesce (mixed seafood cooked in light tomato sauce, B250) and the grilled herb-loaded homemade sausages served with mixed salad (B250). As for the mains, be sure to try the fresh homemade gnocchi (B210), black ink ravioli with lobster (B350), topped with aromatic saffron, and the signature tender lamb shank (B520). Perhaps most excitingly, they also have a special daily lunch set starting from B260. Finally, end your meal with the tempting chocolate salami (B140), made according to the chef’s mom’s recipe.
The drinks: They offer a variety of Italian wines, like Organic Rigoletto and Montecucco Riserva, starting from B1,100 a bottle and B220 glass, and Chef Rota is quick to suggest wine pairings for your meal. They also serve a variety of healthy fresh juices made with organic fruits and vegetables starting from B100 per glass. Beers include Heineken (B90), San Miguel (B90) and Corona (B210).
The crowd: Workers at nearby offices and Italian-loving local residents.
