BANGKOK RESTAURANT

Heawen for Burger Devils

The buzz: As a rule, we’re suspicious of restaurants whose names tout how great they are, but we’re charmed by the ‘w’ in Heawen for Burger Devils. Mono-dish burger eateries seem to be picking up in our fair city, but it’s a rare spot solely devoted to Thai-inspired burgers. Moreover, due to the hotel and spa pedigree of the chef, the ingredients are healthier and/or more high-end stuff like kurobuta pork, Tajima wagyu and wheat buns.

The décor: Interestingly incongruous compared to the food it serves. The dim room is furnished with purple couches, black chairs and a greenish glass partition. The high counter, which reminds us of an old-school soda shop, is actually being converted into a bar.

The food: The highlight here is obviously the pungent, Thai-flavored burgers like the laab lamb burger (B150 a piece/B190 a set), the penang beef burger (B130 a piece/B170 a set), yam fish (battered black cod with yam sauce B130) and more. A bit less spicy are the fish and chips with an exciting array of batter choices: sake, vodka, beer, Pernod or Sangsom (B195). Desserts, too, are comforting, heart-stopping stuff like their New York cheesecake (B69) and skewers of hot chocolate fudge (B69).

The drinks: Apart from soda options in their set menus, even their drinks have some interesting Thai twists. Try the soya frappucino (B59) or the o-leang frappucino (B59).

The crowd: It’s K Village, so the folks are largely nearby office workers, hi-so families and some dates. Pieng-or Mongkolkumnuankhet
