BANGKOK RESTAURANT

Fauchon

The buzz: Established in 1880, Fauchon is a French delicatessen that’s been brought to Bangkok by the company who runs Simply W (Whittard). This cafe is not only a go-to venue for pastries and retail products, though, as there’s a big kitchen serving mainly French classics. Joining the army of French chefs in Bangkok is Executive Chef Jerome Deconinck, who has worked in many countries, including Malaysia and Japan, and had to train at Fauchon Paris before arriving here.

The décor: Quite stylish yet definitely girly with a glittery bar and ceiling, and an emphasis on the brand’s trademark mix of pink and black. Once the weather cools down, you can sit out on the terrace, though they’re considering covering it all in. Fauchon products are on display at almost every turn.

The food: You’ll see the pastries on the shelves as you walk in, while the menu goes big on savory French dishes boasting similar flavors to what you get in Paris, with most ingredients imported from there, too. For starters, you can choose from the platter of selected ham (B590) or the fancy French caviar and blinis (B2,550), while mains include roasted duck in orange sauce served with potato gratin dauphinois (B620) Breakfast takes up much of the menu with the likes of truffle scrambled eggs (B480) or a set including yoghurt, raspberry coulis, coffee or juice and danish or French baguette (B570). Pastry Chef Bruno Le Francois, whose resume boasts many years of artisanal training in France, takes responsibility for the patisserie and boulangerie. You’ll find the brand’s famous éclairs and vanilla millefeuille (B200), which are beautifully decorated, imported macarons (B95) from the mother branch in Paris, Danish pastries and croissants. The popular jars of foie gras are not yet available, but you can find other products, such as jam (B595), tea (B995 for 100 grams) and boxes of chocolates (from B895), to carry home in your very own Fauchon shopping bag (B1,095).

The drinks: You can get a pot of tea (B290) in six flavors, such as salted caramel oolong tea and violet and wild strawberry tea. But if you’re looking for something boozy, cocktails like the Cordon Rouge (vodka, Grand-Marnier, peach liquor and iced tea) are priced at B450. For a premium drop, there’s also the likes of mojito royale (B790)—Parisians’ favorite cocktail—or kir royal (B890). As they’ve also got their own wine label, wine by the glass is available at B450- B550 or by the bottle at B1,500-B6,000. Regular coffee starts from B125.

The crowds: Hip Bangkokians coming to see and be seen, office crowds and brand loyalists.
