Bonafide
The buzz: While Bonafide is set in the Rama 4 area, the restaurant is a far cry from the typical eateries around there. There are no couches or fancy frills, yet the place is still cozy. The food is fusion but a little different from what you might expect from this particular chef, who previously worked for Surface in Thonglor. Just remember to study your map carefully before setting off.
The décor: A real mixed bag, with everything from mismatched silky chairs and superhero wallpaper in one corner to a gazebo and dark wicker seating in their front yard. The casual vibe is further highlighted by sharp and playful colors splashed everywhere. Right beside the bar, a live band performs Thai pop tunes every Friday and Saturday.
The food: Even though there’s a wide range of cuisines available, recommendations are mainly fusion fare like foie gras with khao yam (spicy salad with herbs and rice) and hoisin sauce (B320) or thick bucatini pasta with namya poo (curry with crab in Southern style, B150). Other homey mains include Australian grass-fed tenderloin (B380), crispy pork knuckle with noodles (B160) and foie gras burger (B400). Appetizers include chicken wings with lemon grass (B105) and grilled salmon served with spicy mango salad (B160). There are also some vegetarian options like miang laab taohu (spicy tofu with vegetables wrap, B120) and baked spinach with cheese (B170). If being well-fed is your main concern, rest assured, the dishes here come in huge servings.
The drinks: The recommended cocktails are the tasty Midori Mango Sunset (Midori, lime juice and mango juice, B180) and Planter Punch (dark rum, pineapple juice, orange juice and lemon, B180). There’s also a DIY option that lets you choose your own liquor and juice (B250). For those who come for the outdoors, shisha is priced at B350-B450 with flavors including apple, cherry and pineapple. Beers are La Trappe (B280-B320), Hoegaarden (B200) and draught Singha (B180). There’s only one choice of red wine by the glass at B180.
The crowd: Mid-20s office workers after a local chill-out spot and Japanese expats living in the neighborhood. Pieng-or Mongkolkumnuankhet
