Avenue New York Grill
While it may look like a French-style bistro, Avenue New York Grill is shaping up to be a real deal steakhouse. There are some French dishes on the menu, but there’s also plenty of meat such as the wagyu beef flank steak (B495) or beef carpaccio (B150). Also worth a try are the brunch items like eggs benedict with hollandaise sauce and Canadian bacon (B250). Otherwise, drop by during happy hour (6-7pm) for buy-one-get-one-free on beers and a complimentary steak sandwich.
The buzz: A new steakhouse in town is always a cause for curiosity, often followed by disappointment after a glance at the all-too-pricey menu. But Avenue New York Grill, formerly the site of a French bistro, pairs a shiny European décor with a menu dedicated to American-style steaks at prices that are friendlier than most.
The decor: The dining room is separated into a dedicated dining section and a marble-top bar with stools. The lavish, dimly-lit interior is a bit European and a bit retro, featuring red couches and chandeliers. The little deck out front is quite relaxing if you want to grap some fresh air, take a peak at the night traffic or need to puff on a post-meal cigar.
The food: The meat-centric menu does contain some greens like the classic Waldorf salad (B150). You can also go raw with the beef carpaccio (B150). As for the main attraction, steaks, the beef is sourced from Thailand, Australia and New Zealand. Prices start at B395 for Thai tenderloin or B495 for a wagyu beef flank steak, up to B850 for Australian tenderloin—all 200g servings. Those who don’t like red meat can opt for the likes of grilled half chicken with rosemary and thyme (B275) and the daily seafood specials. They also do a real Sunday brunch with dishes like pancakes, French toast (both B125) and a few egg-based dishes starting from B95. Still hungry? Order some bar bites, such as the deep-fried stuffed peppers with cheese or meat (B95) and buffalo wings (B125).
The drinks: Most wines are new world with prices from B175-B495. Classic cocktails start from B125 while the short list of beers includes Heineken (B120) and Leffe (B220). Stop by for the happy hour (6-7pm) buy-one-get-one deal on beer and cocktails and get a free steak sandwich.
The crowds: Steak-loving expats living in the neighborhood and lots of passersby wandering through this zigzagging soi. Pieng-or Mongkolkumnuankhet
