Opt for the tom yum hed (tom yum soup with fresh mushrooms, B175 small/B215 large), kao hor bai bua (steamed rice, nuts, and beans wrapped in lotus leaf, B210), or the saap nok (spicy stir-fried tofu with Thai herbs and fresh vegetables, B200).

Saras Veg

Saras has all the charms and follies of a backstreet Indian diner: colorful clientele; long menu that includes simple favorites you never see at proper restaurants; cobbled but timely service; deliciously unhealthy food. Dishes are all vegetarian and spiced without caution—the ever-popular paneer dosa (dosa stuffed with cottage cheese, B240) and the idli sambar (idli and a vegetable stew made with tamarind and split pigeon pea, B155) draw Indians after nostalgic flavors.

Save the portrait of the restaurant’s namesake on the second floor, it’s all shelves of Italian cookbooks and warm-colored walls here. Perusing the menu, you might not realize that Govinda serves an all-vegetarian, partially lactose-free menu—an impressive feat for Italian food in this town. The menu covers all our favorite Italian dishes, including egg-free, homemade cannelloni (B285) and melanzane Parmigiana (baked eggplant with tomato sauce and mozzarella, B325).

Saravana Bhavan

Boldly declaring itself the “world’s no. 1 Indian vegetarian restaurant chain,” this restaurant boasts over 100 branches around the world. The restaurant’s ubiquity in its home state of Tamil Nadu, in India’s South, means locals often refer to it as their version of McDonald’s. The menu is gargantuan and includes Mysore masala dosa (red chili chutney spread on thin rice and dosa filled with mashed potatoes and onions, B210) as well as sambar vada (deep-fried lentil donuts set in lentil sambar and garnished with onions and coriander, B175).
